100th Anniversary

As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Day, the African Women Leaders Network for Reproductive Health and Family Planning (AWLN) would like to congratulate our Network Members who have been selected in the "Women Deliver 100". This list champions working to improve the lives of girls and women across the globe. Below is a list of the four Netwok Members selected by Women Deliver.

 

YVONNE CHAKA CHAKA
Yvonne Chaka Chaka of South Africa, fondly known as the “Princess of Africa” is a strong advocate of maternal health. She has travelled around the world, raising awareness of the women’s role in the fight against Malaria. Ms Chaka Chaka has also used her iconic status to call on governments to commit to the UN Millennium Development Goals and in particular MDG 5b.

 
BISI ADELEYE – FAYEMI
Bisi Adeleye – Fayemi of Nigeria is the Co-founder and President of the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF). She was also instrumental in the formation of the African Women Leaders Network for Reproductive Health and Family Planning (AWLN) co – hosted by IPPFAR and the AWDF. Ms Adeleye – Fayemi is a skilled philanthropist who believes in the power of women’s leadership. She is the founder of the African Women’s Leadership Institute and in 2005 set up a specific fund for women taking the lead in addressing HIV/AIDS.
 
LEYMAH GBOWEE
Leymah Gbowee of Liberia is the Founder and Executive Director of the Women Peace and Security Network – Africa. Ms Gbowee was actively engaged in rallying Liberian women to bring an end to civil war and dictatorship in Liberia. She was also a participant in the famous sex strike that demanded an end to the war. Working in partnership with both Christian and Muslim women, Ms Gbowee organized a two – year campaign that forced President Charles Taylor from power and helped elect Ellen Johnson Sirleaf – the first female President in Africa.
 
HON. SAUDATU SANI
Hon. Saudatu Sani is the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on MDGs in Nigeria. As a strong advocate for materanl health, she inspired the government of Nigeria to create a budget line dedicated to ‘reducing the maternal mortality rate’. In addition, Hon Sani opened a Youth and Women’s Development Centre which trained many of its students to open their own businesses. As the Chair of Advocacy Nigeria, Hon Sani has also worked to expand free emergency obstetric care and fund reproductive health services.
